چکیده

Abstract Memory effects in seismology—such as the occurrence of aftershock sequences—are implicitly assumed to be governed by time since main event. However, experiments are yet identify if memory structural or time-dependent mechanisms. Here, we use laser interferometry examine fluctuations deformation which naturally emerge along an experimental shear fault within a compressed frictional granular medium. We find that occurs succession localized micro-slips distributed fault. The associated distributions released seismic moments, well strain and correlations between successive events, follow exactly empirical laws natural earthquakes. methodology initially developed seismology reveal at laboratory scale underlying causal structure this behavior triggering kernel. propose strain, not time, controls our analog.

RHex Slips on Granular Media

RHex is one of very few legged robots being used for realworld rough-terrain locomotion applications. From its early days, RHex has been shown to locomote successfully over obstacles higher than its own hip height [1], and more recently, on sand [2] and sand dunes [3], [4] (see Figure 1). The commercial version of RHex made by Boston Dynamics1 has been demonstrated in a variety of difficult, na...

Spatiotemporal Correlations of Earthquakes

Statistical properties of earthquakes are studied both by the analysis of real earthquake catalog of Japan and by numerical computer simulations of the spring-block model in both one and two dimensions. Particular attention is paid to the spatiotemporal correlations of earthquakes, e.g., the recurrence-time distribution or the time evolution before and after the mainshock of seismic distributio...

Elastic waves in the presence of a granular shear band formed by direct shear.

The propagation of elastic waves in a box under direct shear, filled with glass beads and being sheared at constant rates, is studied experimentally and theoretically. The respective velocities are shown to be essentially unchanged from that in a static granular system under the same pressure and shear stress but without a shear band. Influence of shear band on sound behaviors are also briefly ...

Shear band formation in granular media as a variational problem.

Strain in sheared dense granular material is often localized in a narrow region called the shear band. Recent experiments in a modified Couette cell provided localized shear flow in the bulk away from the confining walls. The nontrivial shape of the shear band was measured as the function of the cell geometry. First, we present a geometric argument for narrow shear bands that connects the funct...

Dynamic Shear Band Propagation and Micro-structure of Adiabatic Shear Band

Meshfree Galerkin approximations in both two and three dimensions have been used in simulations of dynamic shear band propagation in an asymmetrically impact-loaded prenotched plate. Failure mode switching and failure mode transitions, which have been reported experimentally, are replicated in numerical computations. For intermediate impact speed (25 m=s < V 6 30 m=s), the numerical results sho...
